Throwback to this very special commission I completed for a client in the USA. 35x50cm, pastels on Pastelmat. Rosie wasn’t just a pet—she was family. Born on Thanksgiving Day in 2013, she became her owner’s shadow through years of law school and life’s challenges. She was sweet, sassy, headstrong, and endlessly comforting. One of those souls who truly didn’t know she was a dog. Her human wrote to me with so much love and detail, and I felt incredibly honored to create this portrait. Here are their words: “Our beloved Rosie was born on November 28, 2013 (Thanksgiving day) and she joined our family 6 weeks later. Rosie passed away on June 6, 2021 as I held her paw and expressed my unconditional love for her. I was and I’m still absolutely devastated over the loss of my precious girl. Since day one of joining my family she was my shadow especially during my four years of law school which was consumed of thousands of hours studying. Rosie had the personality that everyone was drawn to—she was a very loving and compassionate boxer (was always there to comfort us when needed) but she was also a very headstrong and sassy, demanding girl (as I think most boxers are) who really didn’t know she was a dog. Now you may be asking yourselves… whiskers? But they’re huge! That’s because they belonged to a tiger and these will make up a very special bouquet for a zoo keeper. As such an obviously massive cat lover, I don’t think I need to say too much about how much this meant to me. Holding these in my hands felt unreal, and as always, I tried to put as much love into this hoop as I could. As always, I am so grateful for these opportunities. It all started by accident: at 36, I picked up a pencil again. 9 years on, I feel enormously privileged to create wildlife and pet portraits for clients all around the world. If you're new here, welcome! And if you've been with me a while - thank you from the bottom of my heart. I couldn't do what I love without your support. I began drawing anything and everything, but after sketching my mum's ragdoll cat, the pet requests rolled in. Turns out, capturing animals in all their detailed glory: soft fur, sparkling eyes, oh the wet nose - is my thing. Now I work in pastels, acrylics and oils (serious art supply addiction here - iykyk), balancing studio life with family chaos: an Ironman-in-training husband, thrill-seeking teens, and of course my two spaniels, Coco and Red, who you might have spotted already. Every time I work on a double portrait like this, there’s something special in how the two animals relate to each other. Paddy and Brig had such different energies (one a bit more serious, the other softer) and I tried to let that come through in their posture, expression, and even the way the light hits their fur. Painting two dogs together always tells a little story. I love seeing how their personalities play off each other as the piece comes to life. I usually get questions about how I build layers in pastel… so here’s a glimpse into the process. For this one, I started by blocking in soft shapes with vibrant, saturated colours using pastel sticks, and then gradually refined the details with pastel pencils. Since the pencil pigment is usually more muted, I try not to cover everything completely; I like allowing the richness of the soft pastels to show through the pencil texture. That contrast gives the fur a more natural vibrancy, especially in those lighter, golden tones. I build everything in very thin layers, letting the underpainting shine through just enough to keep the colours alive. Nikko the ginger cat ❤️ pastels on Pastelmat board. From my clients words “ Nikko chose me as his owner and I loved him more than anything. He was a medium sized cat, he was a pale oranger cat ginger to be more precise. He had blond mixed with orange stripes. His eyes were yellow or green depending the lighting. He loved flowers especially red ones the color red attracted him a lot, so I tried to have red roses in the house for him. His tail was completely striped like a tiger. He was very intelligent, it’s like if he was a child. He understood everything you told him and would respond to you with his little meows. Nikko new how much he was loved my myself and my mother, we was definitely spoiled. He was very playful, his eyes would turn completely black and we new trouble was coming lol. Le encantaban las flores sobre todo las rojas el color rojo le atraía mucho, así que procuraba tener rosas rojas en casa para él. Su cola era completamente rayada como la de un tigre. Era muy inteligente, es como si fuera un niño. Entendía todo lo que le decías y te respondía con sus pequeños maullidos. Nikko sabía lo mucho que le queríamos mi madre y yo, estaba definitivamente mimado. Era muy juguetón, sus ojos se volvían completamente negros y sabíamos que se avecinaban problemas.
