Climb alongside a waterfall in Victoria! - Nestled in the Murrindindi Scenic Reserve and just to hours from Melbourne, the Wilhelmina Falls Loop hike will take you past flowing creeks and lush forests to one of the most beautiful waterfalls you will ever see! The trail begins at the Water Gauge Campground and leads you over a suspension bridge and past towering gum trees. As you ascend, the view of the surrounding mountain ranges will get better and better until you eventually reach the breathtaking 75 metre tall Wilhelmina Falls which flows year-round down a granite rock face. You’ll pass moss-covered pipelines, old timber bridges, and even walk alongside the original tramline once used to transport workers and equipment. Midway through the trail, you’ll reach the historic Rubicon Power Station which still operates today after more than 100 years. Keep going and you’ll be rewarded with the Rubicon Dam and a surreal aqueduct waterfall spilling into the forest below. Extinct volcano near Melbourne! - Located 3.5 hours from the Melbourne CBD, Mt Elephant is a striking extinct volcano in southwest Victoria that may have erupted 185,000 years ago! The volcano is one of the highest volcanoes in Victoria and rises 240 metres above the surrounding plain. Last week I got the opportunity to climb up to the summit for panoramic views of the Western District. Starting from the visitor centre, this incredible 3km hike takes you around the craters rim and you’ll pass a number of interpretive signs which tells you about the history of the region.
