A journalist investigating corruption in India’s construction industry has been found in a septic tank, with his heart allegedly ripped out and liver cut into pieces. Mukesh Chandrakar suffered a brutal death before his body was buried in the underground container to decompose and covered with cement to hide the crime. An autopsy report revealed the 28-year-old had suffered 15 fractures to his head and ribs, had a broken neck and some or his organs were removed. A 25-year-old man has died after a car crashed into a crowd of pedestrians on Christmas morning. Aidan Chapman died from injuries on New Year’s Eve after a driver crashed into four pedestrians on Shaftsbury Avenue just before 12.45am on December 25. Paying tribute to their son, Aidan’s parents said they have ‘lost the best part of themselves’. Months after Californians voted against a ballot proposition to end inmate servitude, incarcerated firefighters are on the front lines of the deadly wildfires in the Greater Los Angeles area. Lori Wilson, the California Assembly member who spearheaded the proposition, said she’s spoken with incarcerated people who say many love the work they do as firefighters, but they wish they were paid more. “They find it truly rewarding and enriching,” Wilson told NBC News. “It’s something they are extremely proud of. We’re fighting to have additional wages, and to be fairly compensated. Not only in adequate wages, but once they leave incarceration, being able to use that service for further employment.”

Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump signed an executive order pausing all foreign aid for approximately three months. This comes after reports that two top USAID security officials refused to grant administrative access to members of the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. As a result, they were placed on administrative leave. According to CNN, the officials resisted providing access to sensitive classified information requiring security clearances. Foreign aid accounts for less than 1% of the U.S. federal budget, with USAID representing only a portion of that spending. The agency employs more than 10,000 people.
