Alena Analeigh McQuarter, a trailblazer in science and medicine, made history at 13-years-old as the youngest Black person ever accepted into medical school in the United States. This spring, at 16-year-old, she became a proud Spring 2025 initiate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. through the Lambda Nu Sigma Alumnae Chapter in Toronto, Canada. Born in 2008 in Fontana, California and raised near Fort Worth, Texas, Alena has consistently defied expectations. After graduating high school at just 12 years old, she attended Arizona State University, originally majoring in astronomical and planetary science and chemistry. Her career goal was to become a NASA engineer, an ambition she pursued by interning at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, becoming the youngest person ever to hold an internship there. Her focus shifted to medicine after a transformative trip to Jordan with her nonprofit, Brown STEM Girl. Moved by global health disparities, she pivoted to pre-med with a particular interest in viral immunology. In 2022, the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Heersink School of Medicine offered her early acceptance through the Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program. But Alena’s impact extends far beyond her academic achievements. As the founder of Brown STEM Girl, she has created a platform dedicated to supporting girls of color in science, technology, engineering, and math through scholarships, mentorships, and international study opportunities. 👉🏾 Click on the link in our bio(@watchtheyard) to read our full article about her. #SigmaGammaRho #WatchTheYard

Starting today, Washington, D.C. transforms into a sea of crimson and cream as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated kicks off its 57th National Convention. From July 8–13, 2025, more than 20,000 members of the international sisterhood will gather at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, joined by an additional 13,000 sorors participating virtually, making this one of the largest and most anticipated conventions in the organization’s 112-year history. Founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University by 22 visionary Black women, Delta Sigma Theta has built a legacy of unwavering scholarship, sisterhood, service, and social action. That legacy takes center stage this week as members from across the globe convene under the theme: “Forward with Fortitude: A Homecoming of Strength and Purpose.” “It is my honor to welcome our dynamic sisterhood to the 57th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta,” saidInternational President Elsie Cooke-Holmes. “We honor our origin and our future through our theme. During the coming days, we will be inspired by our legacy and energized by the possibilities ahead, as we exchange ideas and information, hear from experts, and learn about best practices to actively engage our sisterhood, empower our communities, and elevate our impact.” This week’s convention promises a dynamic slate of programming rooted in the Sorority’s historic pillars: scholarship, sisterhood, service, and social action. Attendees can expect transformative panels, networking opportunities, community-centered initiatives, and celebrations of Black excellence that reaffirm Delta’s influence across generations. With thousands of members gathering in the nation’s capital and thousands more tuning in virtually, this convention is more than an event, it’s a declaration of purpose, unity, and forward momentum. 👉🏾 Click on the link in our bio(@watchtheyard) for the full article. #DeltaSigmaTheta #DST1913 #WatchTheYard #NPHC

Dominique Thorne is bringing Black brilliance to the Marvel Universe and she’s doing it as a proud Delta. Thorne is a Spring 2018 initiate of the Mu Gamma Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Now, she’s making waves in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the star of Ironheart, premiering June 24 exclusively on Disney+. Thorne plays Riri Williams, a brilliant young inventor whose high-tech suits rival those of Iron Man himself. First introduced to audiences in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Riri now returns to the spotlight in a series that blends intellect, innovation, and cultural depth. “Ironheart is such a great character in publishing,” said executive producer Ryan Coogler. “In the comic book, Riri Williams and Tony Stark had a relationship, she was a student at MIT who came from an almost polar opposite background, but they shared a passion to better society.” Writers like Eve Ewing have since redefined Riri’s journey, rooting her story in Chicago and expanding her cultural impact. The upcoming series picks up after Wakanda Forever, with Riri navigating the collision of technology and mysticism in her hometown of Chicago. As she works to make her mark, she faces off with Parker Robbins aka The Hood, played by Anthony Ramos. The cast also includes Lyric Ross, Alden Ehrenreich, Regan Aliyah, Manny Montana, and Anji White. With episodes directed by Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes, and writing led by Chinaka Hodge, Ironheart stands out as one of Marvel’s most anticipated and culturally resonant series to date. Marvel Television’s all-new series from executive producer Ryan Coogler, launches with a 3-episode premiere June 24 at 6pm PT/ 9pm ET, only on @DisneyPlus Click on the link in our bio(@watchtheyard) for the full article! #Ironheart #cornelluniversity #DeltaSigmaTheta @Disney+ @Marvel Studios
