One person died and seven more were injured on Wednesday when a Tesla truck caught fire and exploded outside Donald Trump’s Las Vegas hotel, authorities said. Las Vegas metropolitan police and Clark county fire department officials in Nevada said at a news conference that a person died inside the vehicle. Another seven people nearby received minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment. According to a law enforcement official, the truck was rented via the Turo app and appeared to be carrying a large load of fireworks. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. US president Joe Biden said on Wednesday that law enforcement was investigating whether there were any links between a New Orleans truck attack that killed 15 people and the Tesla explosion. President Donald Trump began his first full day in office attending a prayer service at the Washington National Cathedral. The Episcopal bishop of Washington, Mariann Edgar Budde, pleaded with Trump during the service, asking the newly elected president to protect immigrants and respect gay rights. “There are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican and independent families, some who fear for their lives,” she said as Trump and his family watched on. Prior to the prayer service, Trump launched a sweeping immigration crackdown and promised mass deportations. #Trump #DonaldTrump #US #news #politics #world

The former Australian human rights commissioner Chris Sidoti appears in New York to present a report by the UN's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. He warns that as the war against Hamas continues, the Israeli government risks creating more enemies in the children now living through the conflict in Gaza. 'I wonder when the current Israeli prime minister Netanyahu talks about finishing off Hamas, I wonder about what the 1 million children in Gaza will be doing in 20 years time,' Sidoti says. #Israel #news #Australia #UN #Palestine

Joe Biden’s final address to the nation struck an ominous tone after warning of the growing power of America’s ultra-wealthy, and cautioning that an emerging oligarchy threatens the foundations of US democracy. The Wednesday prime-time Oval Office speech came as Biden prepares to hand the presidency back to Donald Trump, who he defeated in 2020 only to see him return to power after Biden’s own dramatic exit from politics last summer. The president outlined some of his most pressing concerns, including what he described as a “crumbling” free press, the outsized influence of the military-industrial complex, rising disinformation, and the need to remove dark money from politics. He also called for constitutional amendments to ensure presidential accountability, arguing that no president should be immune from prosecution for crimes committed while in office.
