Can you guess this animal? This is a drawing of a modern animal if you drew it the way many early science illustrators drew dinosaurs. They just drew skin wrapped around bone without muscle, turning this normal animal into a monster. This is called “shrink wrapping” and it has affected the way a lot of us think about what dinosaurs looked like… If you want to know more about dinosaurs, watch our longer video!

Dinosaurs lived for WAY longer than most people think... My favorite fact about this is: There was more time that separates Stegosaurus from T-Rex than separates T-Rex from us! Listen to this. Scientists just recorded these “sounds” COMING FROM THE SUN! They were recorded by the Parker Solar Probe, which is traveling closer to the sun than any spacecraft ever before. But if you thought - hey, you can’t hear things in space, there’s no air, you’re right! The “sounds” are really vibrations of electric and magnetic fields that scientists converted into sound waves. Here's what they mean... Scientists have been turning space data into sound for decades as a way to help us pick out things we don’t notice in raw data. And this new probe is gathering a whole new symphony from the sun for us to learn from… If you want more optimistic science and tech stories, follow along for our show Huge If True!

This new plane just went faster than sound WITH NO AUDIBLE SONIC BOOM. And it’s a big deal for bringing back supersonic planes you can fly in. You used to be able to get from New York to London in 3 and a half hours. But that all changed when the famous Concorde stopped flying, in part because many countries banned supersonic flight over land, largely because of the BOOOOOOM it makes as it passes by. But this plane showed how we might bring supersonic back, because the boom never made it to the ground!! And the way they did that is pretty cool... This is the actual size of the brain of a dinosaur the size of an elephant! After discovering a skull of a Pachyrhinosaurus, scientists put it through a scanner, which helped them to reconstruct what brain would have fit inside. Here's what they learned... Where did the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs* actually land? Let me show you... This is the impact site of a giant space rock wider than Mount Everest is tall from 66 million years ago. But for a long time, we didn’t know it was there... We made a whole video about the cutting edge of dinosaur research, check it out! This tiny new brain is a huge deal. Scientists mapped an entire fruit fly brain. It’s the size of a poppy seed. Our human brains are about the size of a cantaloupe. This map is different from other brain images you’ve seen because it shows all of the almost 140,000 neurons linked by over 50 million synapses. It took slicing the brain into 7,000 layers, imaging it 21 million times, and having hundreds of volunteers help piece it together to create. If we tried to do this to a human brain, it would take billions of dollars and hundreds of years! That’s not feasible right now, but this fly brain can tell us a lot already... How big were dinosaurs really? Imagine you lined a bunch of them up by size… You’d see the tiny Anchiornis, the Compsognathus here, the famous velociraptor (smaller than I thought!), the Nyasasaurus, the Pachyrhinosaurus, the Triceratops, the Stegosaurus, the T-Rex! One of the largest known dinosaurs, the Argentinosaurus, was about as long and heavier than a commercial airplane... We made a longer video all about dinosaurs! SpaceX did it AGAIN, they caught their rocket booster! But it didn’t all go exactly as planned. Here’s what happened with the recent Flight 7… Catching this booster again is a HUGE deal. When a rocket is launched and reaches the boundaries of space, it breaks apart. The spaceship portion goes off into space, and the rocket booster portion comes back to earth. Traditionally NASA has their rocket boosters fall into the ocean - but that means costly recovery. But SpaceX has now for the second time directed that booster back to ground and caught it! Which is just SO COOL. And matters for making space flight more sustainable and cheaper. But the spaceship portion ran into trouble: It appears they had an oxygen and fuel leak, and “disassembled” in the atmosphere. All in, it’s a big moment that shows both the challenges of space and a leap toward making space more accessible. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe just broke the record for the closest we’ve EVER been to our sun. And because of the sun’s gravity, it’s also become the fastest man-made object ever. What would happen if I tried to fly a plane above another planet? On Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune... would it fly more easily? Would it come crashing down? The North and South poles sometimes swap places… You might know that the churning metal soup inside Earth’s outer core generates electrical currents, which in turn creates the magnetic field around the Earth - which is the reason you’re not getting fried by cosmic radiation right now. But what you might not know (ok, I didn't know until recently), is that every so often, that magnetic field actually REVERSES. But the coolest part is how we know that... Some scientists are trying to figure out how to predict the movement of the magnetic field, but thankfully, it protects us on the surface either way! We made a longer episode about the deep earth and you won’t believe what we find... #animation #deepearth #science #tech

This crazy snake-robot is built to search for alien life on one of Saturn’s moons. Beneath a thick, icy surface, there’s an ocean that spews plumes of water through cracks. In them, NASA has found organic molecules indicating it COULD support life. That ice makes it hard to study with traditional rovers, but this terrifying lil’ guy can SLITHER or even DIVE down into the water… It’s possible we could find alien life with a snake robot and I think that’s very cool. Can you guess what this is? It’s a super close-up image of something you might have eaten. These images show detail smaller than the wavelength of visible light - which means they’re too small to be taken with a normal microscope.
Instead, if you fire a beam of electrons at something and measure how they get either reflected or transmitted… you can see WAY more detail. It’s called an electron microscope.

Google just announced a crazy new quantum computing chip. It can solve a problem in 5 minutes that would take one of the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years! BUT that problem was a “benchmark” problem called RCS, chosen specifically because it’s extremely hard for a supercomputer - which are still better at basically everything practical. The real reason you should care about quantum computers and this new chip is less about beating supercomputers at things they’re already great at and more about doing new things - like really accurate simulations of nature at a quantum level that could be used for drug discovery or battery development or more. This new chip matters for how we might get there. Here’s why… If you want to know more about the real future of quantum computing, Marques and I made a longer video! This is incredible: What you’re watching is the embryo of a fruit fly while it’s developing. Scientists are using it to unlock secrets about human disease. Here’s what’s happening... Right now it’s going through waves of nuclei divisions from back to front. Then each nucleus becomes a cell, and the cells communicate and organize themselves while continuing to divide. But along the way, this process will get disrupted in normal embryos, in ways that can also happen unexpectedly in adult mammals (like us!) and lead to disease. So visualizing how cells work together and understanding what happens when things go wrong is helping scientists treat human diseases better. Plus, it just looks so… beautiful… If you want more optimistic science in tech stories, follow along (here or elsewhere) #science #tech #medicine #visualization
