The definition of a “Deliberate Play” has caused a ton of misunderstanding across the world. We must use the guidance provided by IFAB in the laws of the game, not the common English definition of deliberate. The laws of the game defined goalkeeper control of the ball very different differently than the common definition or as it is seen in other sports. Per the laws of the game, it looks like the goalkeeper has “control”. These laws are designed to protect the goalkeeper. Many goalkeepers can tell you horror stories of having hands and fingers and wrist broken because players came in too aggressively when they were trying to collect a ball. This is a brutal call for any Referee to have to make. The margins are so slim. I think 99% of referees would call this as a foul in favor of the goalkeeper. in super slow motion with multiple angles, it does look like the attacker got to this ball a fraction of a second before the goalkeeper got a touch on it. The constant whining about every perceived injustice has become comical. I feel awful for these referees. This is exactly why we have VAR at the highest levels of the game. This would have been very difficult to spot in real time from either the referee or assistant referee position on the field.
